Made Familiar

Our History

Established Year: 2009

In 2009, StarShine Student Centre emerged with a singular vision that went beyond traditional approaches to education. Our founder, recognizing the challenges faced by learners grappling to understand concepts taught in class, envisioned a unique approach. We set out to create a resource that echoed the very questions learners struggled with, providing a valuable tool for repetition and reinforcement. This not only facilitated a deeper understanding of concepts but also translated into improved academic performance. Moreover, we kept teachers in mind, aiming to simplify the revision process for national exams. This dual focus aimed at both learners and educators embodies our commitment to optimizing the full potential of every individual. Thus, our guiding slogan emerged – “Internalise Concepts, Optimise Potential.”

Founding Principles

From the beginning, we set out with a commitment to:

Educational Excellence

Made Familiar is founded on the principle of educational excellence. Our commitment extends beyond conventional teaching methods to provide resources that elevate the standard of education. By focusing on high-quality materials and innovative approaches, we strive to contribute to the pursuit of academic excellence among learners.

Learner Confidence

Building learner confidence is a foundational principle at Made Familiar. We recognize that understanding concepts and excelling academically go hand in hand with fostering self-assurance. Through our resources and methodologies, we aim to instil the confidence needed for students to tackle National Exams, with a sense of assurance and competence.

Learner-Centric Approach

Made Familiar is rooted in a learner-centric philosophy. Recognizing the challenges learners face in understanding classroom concepts, we aim to provide resources that cater specifically to their needs, fostering a deeper comprehension of subjects.

Repetition and Reinforcement

Our approach centres on the principles of repetition and reinforcement. By creating resources that echo the questions learners struggle with, we facilitate a continuous cycle of revisiting and strengthening fundamental concepts, ultimately enhancing their academic performance.

Empowering Teachers & Educators

We are committed to empowering educators. We understand that teachers play a pivotal role in guiding students, and as such, our resources are designed not only to aid learners but also to provide teachers with tools that simplify the revision process for National Exams. This dual focus ensures that educators have effective resources at their disposal, contributing to the overall enhancement of the learning experience.

Early Years

In our formative years, StarShine Student Centre began with a single publication – K.C.S.E. Made Familiar – Mathematics, setting the stage for a legacy built on empowering learners and teachers for academic exellence.

Milestones

2009: StarShine Student Centre as a Tuition Centre

StarShine Student Centre was born in 2009 as a tuition centre that offered tuition classes for secondary school students for Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The tuition centre was the foundation and building block for the publishing firm.

2010: K.C.S.E. Made Familiar – Mathematics was published.

This was the beginning of the Made Familiar journey. Popularly known as ‘KMF’. In addition, it was the publication that pioneered the growth of Made Familiar as a publishing firm. The revision material was compiled by our founder setting ground for the other subjects that followed.

Over the years, 13 titles have been published under K.C.S.E. Made Familiar for Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Geography, Kiswahili, English, Biology Practical, History & Government, Agriculture, Business Studies, C.R.E and Chemistry Practical.

2015: K.C.P.E. Made Familiar – Mathematics was published.

We ventured into the primary school world with the same aim – to empower both learners and teachers for academic excellence. This opened the world of K.C.P.E. Made Familiar and we went ahead to publish 3 more titles in this field: Science, Kiswahili and English.

Following the implementation of the new curriculum, CBC, we said goodbye to this series with the last publications being 2023 Edition.

2021: CBC Made Familiar Readers were published.

The first set of CBC Made Familiar Readers were published once again opening ground for quality storybooks for learners that combine both storytelling and internalising concepts taught in class. The readers brought a practical approach to learning further enhancing the aim of the Competency Based Curriculum.

Currently, over 30 CBC Made Familiar Readers have been published.

2022: Setbooks Made Familiar

A series of guidebooks for the set texts for secondary school students were published. This was a mini-project with the aim of helping learners prepare for Exams on set texts.

2023: CBC Made Familiar Workbooks for Kindergarten were published.

This was yet another ground-breaking project for us diving us deeper into the world of CBC and how we can make learning fun for the learners and easier for the teachers and parents. Considering the lack of enough awareness and knowledge of the new curriculum – CBC – we aim to help teachers implement the new curriculum as well as help learners understand what they are taught. We do this through practical activities.

As the years unfolded, Made Familiar expanded its horizons, venturing into new levels and sections. This expansion was guided by a commitment to meeting the evolving needs of teachers, learners, and the industry itself.
