The questions have been arranged in topics and in their respective forms in which they are taught. The questions are in their original form that is, as they appeared in K.C.S.E. papers. Beneath every question the following have been clearly indicated.

  • Marks carried by the question
  • Year tested

  • Number in the paper.

This information will help the student identify the mostly tested topics and the various ways in which themes in these topics are tested. The answers to the questions have been presented immediately after each paper for easier reference.

Once a topic is taught and completed in class, the student should work on all questions from that topic in this book. This helps the student understand fully the concepts learnt.

By attempting all questions from a topic that has just been learnt, the student improves his/her retention of skills and procedures.

Past K.S.C.E. questions play an important role in familiarizing a student with national examinations. For topics frequently tested, the number of ways in which concepts can be tested is limited and so similar ideas recur.

History and Government is an interesting subject. A great historian R. G. Collingwood in his book, “The idea of History” (OUP 1994) argues that history is a science concerned with human action in the past, pursued by interpretation of evidence for the sake of human self-knowledge. This therefore challenges the student to value the subject and give it the needed attention for excellent results. K.C.S.E. tests the candidate’s ability to comprehend, apply and analyse History and Government themes that are spelt out in the secondary syllabus. This workbook is therefore designed to guide students in answering various K.C.S.E. questions.

Passing History and Government is easy, just be attentive in class, make good notes, revise adequately using reliable and trustworthy books such as K.C.S.E. Made Familiar, have a positive attitude, work closely with your teachers and fellow students and above all have self-confidence!
